The political role of New Chilean
Song.
In Chile there was an era
where the Chilean music had a special importance, because in the lyrics of
songs was express different political messages about society, however, on
account of the dictatorship of Pinochet the principals artist of this era were
obligated to flee Chile, producing the fragmentation of this music movement called
the new Chilean song.
New Chilean Song was a
movement and gender of music that incorporated in their songs strong political
and social themes with the goal of denunciate and makes problematic the social
problems that in Chile of 60´s and 70´s was happening. Their style of music was
based in Andean culture, in the sense that the artist that was belong to new Chilean
song used instruments like “zampoña” or “quena” and their songs had a
special rhythm of “trote”. Inside of
theirs most important artist was Victor Jara, Violeta Parra, Quilapayún, Inti
Illimani, Patricio Mans, and others.
I would like emphasize in political
role that had this movement, which did make think to Chilean people and make
visible the problems of the Chilean society, being of special importance in the
victory of Popular Unity, because of this movement generated the articulation
and union of Chilean people to believe in a project to a better Chile, however,
this thing was ruined because the dictatorship in Chile, so in our days we
don´t see this role in the Chilean music.
In conclusion, the political
role that new Chilean song had, actually, we had lost it and in this place the
music just has a commercial role where their goal is unique and exclusively
sells a product without a special message.
